The Institute of Music Therapy "Music, Art and Process" (Vitoria Gasteiz-Spain), defines this discipline as:
“The scientific application of sound, music and movement, by way of training how to listen, and play an instrument, thus integrates the cognitive, the affective and the motor, developing awareness and enhancing the creative process. In this way we can facilitate the communication, promote individual expression and enable Group and Social integration ".
By applying this discipline in Special Education, it has been found that many children have improved their communication skills (cognitive, sensory-motor or perceptual-motor, social, emotional and psychological).
Music therapists work to improve their skills, change specific behaviors, or teach them new skills through the musical experience.
